Your adventure begins as you collect your rental car from Split Airport and head inland toward Mostar, the cultural heart of Herzegovina. The journey takes you through changing landscapes, from the coastal Mediterranean to the dramatic limestone valleys. Settle into your accommodation in Mostar, where Ottoman-era stone houses line cobblestone streets. Enjoy a welcome dinner featuring local specialties as you prepare for the trails ahead.
After breakfast, lace up for a hike that begins right from your doorstep. The trail climbs steadily through pine forests and rocky outcrops, revealing increasingly dramatic views of Mostar’s canyon and the emerald Neretva River far below. You’ll reach a scenic, glass-bottomed viewpoint offering sweeping views of the city, the opposing mountains and countryside. The route continues along the ridge, offering panoramic vistas before descending back to town. Return to Mostar with the afternoon free to explore the historic bazaar, the Old Bridge, enjoy traditional Bosnian delicacies or relax at a riverside café.
A short drive brings you to the town of Blagaj, where a centuries-old Dervish monastery sits at the base of a towering cliff at the Buna River spring. Your hiking trail climbs through Mediterranean vegetation toward the ruins of Blagaj Fortress. Stone ramparts crown the heights above, commanding views over the valley below. The path winds past ancient walls and through quiet woodlands before descending to the Blagaj Tekke, a Dervish monastery considered to be one of Bosnia & Herzegovina’s most holy and ancient sites. Explore the Ottoman buildings and bridges, and stroll the village along the River Buna pausing for lunch in one of the local restaurants. From Blagaj, drive up winding mountain roads to Umoljani, a remote mountain village on the edge of wilderness. Your accommodation awaits in this tranquil highland setting.
Today you’ll tackle Visočica, one of the region’s most rewarding peaks. Drive to the trailhead and begin your ascent through alpine meadows dotted with wildflowers. The path climbs steadily through changing terrain, from grassy slopes to rocky ridges. As you gain elevation, the views expand dramatically: valleys drop away on all sides and distant peaks emerge on the horizon. At the summit, you’ll find yourself on top of the world, with 360-degree views stretching across Bosnia’s mountain wilderness. Return to Umoljani with the evening free to rest, eat well and recover from your mountain adventure.
Today’s hike begins directly from your accommodation and takes you to Lukomir, Bosnia’s highest and most isolated village. The trail follows ancient shepherd paths across rolling highland pastures. As you ascend, the path leads you to a panoramic summit where breathtaking views unfold in every direction and dramatic cliffs plunge hundreds of meters into the canyon below. Continuing along the ridge, medieval stone houses with distinctive pyramid-shaped roofs appear ahead as you approach the village – a settlement that has maintained its traditional way of life for centuries. Stop at a welcoming homestead for lunch and refreshments, where locals still prepare homemade “pita” using centuries-old recipes. Savor this authentic meal and follow the trail towards the canyon, passing stunning scenery and viewpoints before completing the loop. Once back in Umoljani, enjoy your evening at leisure.
After breakfast, drive to the trailhead for today’s hike into the heart of Treskavica Mountain. The path winds through subalpine forest before emerging onto open ridges where glacial lakes shimmer in high basins. This is pristine mountain territory where ibex roam and eagles soar overhead. Midway through your hike, reach a mountain hut perfectly positioned for a refreshment stop, with a breathtaking view of the lake reflecting surrounding mountain peaks. Continue through this spectacular alpine environment before returning to Umoljani. Spend your final evening in Umoljani, perhaps watching the sunset paint the surrounding peaks in alpenglow.
Today you’ll depart Umoljani and make your way toward Blidinje Nature Park, your next base for exploring the wild landscapes of Bosnia. The drive takes around 2.5 hours, giving you plenty of time for stops and sightseeing along the way. Here are some easy-to-reach suggestions:
Sarajevo
A visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina’s capital offers a fascinating mix of history, culture, and architecture. The old town, Baščaršija, is a great place to stretch your legs, enjoy a coffee, or take in the city’s Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian heritage.
Konjic
This small town on the banks of the Neretva River makes for a relaxed stop. Its historic stone bridge, Stara Ćuprija, and nearby cafés give the town a warm and inviting atmosphere. If you’re interested in modern history, Tito’s Bunker, a vast Cold War underground complex, is also located here and open for visits.
Blidinje Nature Park
If you prefer to head straight toward Blidinje, you can take a short walk to the Borova Glava viewpoint upon arrival. The path leads to a 15-meter cross dedicated to mountaineers, with lovely views over Blidinje Lake and the surrounding valley.
In the evening, we recommend trying some of the local dishes in one of the Blidinje area restaurants, a great way to settle in before tomorrow’s adventure.
Your final full hiking day takes you to one of Bosnia’s most iconic natural landmarks: “Hajdučka Vrata”, or the Outlaws’ Gate. Drive to the trailhead and begin your ascent through mountain forests. The path climbs toward a massive stone arch that pierces through the mountain, a naturally formed gateway carved by centuries of wind and weather. Along the way, stop at a welcoming mountain hut for refreshments. On your way back, retrace the trail and enjoy the open views across valleys and peaks. Descend to your vehicle and drive back to Blidinje.
After breakfast, begin your drive back to Split, winding through mountain passes and valleys that now feel familiar. Return your rental car at the airport, carrying memories of dramatic peaks, hidden villages, and trails that revealed the wild heart of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

This adventure requires regular hiking experience and a good level of fitness. You’ll tackle four consecutive days of sustained mountain hiking, with nearly 1000 meters of elevation gain each day and distances ranging from 13 to 20 km. The trails demand sure footing on varied terrain,from rocky paths to alpine meadows. If you’re comfortable with full-day hikes in mountainous terrain and enjoy the rhythm of multi-day trekking, this tour will reward you with some of the Balkans’ most spectacular landscapes.

This is a self-guided tour with your own rental car, giving you complete flexibility and independence throughout your journey.
To/From Split (SPU): Regular direct connections from major European hubs including London, Berlin, Frankfurt, Paris, Amsterdam, and many other cities. Split Airport is well-connected year-round, with increased frequency during the summer season.
You will cross from Croatia into Bosnia and Herzegovina on Day 1, and return to Croatia on Day 8.

Border Crossing Procedure
Border crossings between Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina are generally straightforward and efficient. Your rental car documentation will include necessary insurance for Bosnia and Herzegovina.
A: Booking a Self-Guided tour you are quite flexible in your day by day schedule and activities. Accommodation & rental car are booked in advance so you should keep the accommodation schedule as planned, but other than that you can freely switch between activities. Initially, our itinerary is planned out to make the most of each day and to keep your experience diverse, but you can make changes according to your preferences and pace.
A: There is always an option to book private transfers throughout the tour, both for airport pick-up / drop off and for your local daily hikes.
